Many people are looking for cheap airfare to Mexico, so you should not be afraid to approach your travel agent about this subject. If you have a definite price range, state it in advance, and the travel agent may be able to offer suggestions about travel dates or airlines.

Ideas for Cheap Airfare to Mexico

There are no special concerns for Mexico in terms of finding cheap international flights from abroad. The usual rules for shopping for cheap airfare apply to getting cheap airfare to Mexico as well. Never buy direct from the airlines if you want a low price. If you are a student, teacher, or are under 26, look into getting a special discount ticket from travel agencies catering to students and/or budget travelers. If you’re flexible as to what date you depart or return, but can commit to taking a ticket that does not allow date changes after you buy it, you can often get an excellent rate through a budget travel agency or online service. Just give them a general idea of when you want to go, and your target price.

Cheap Airfare to Mexico Destinations within the Country

Within Mexico, there are only a few big players in domestic air travel, and the lack of competition means there are not such great differences in price from one ticket to the next. Airlines’ published prices for domestic air travel are lower than comparable domestic flight prices in many other countries, so it’s not such a bad deal. However, if you know in advance you will be traveling within Mexico, you might want to work that flight into a package as part of a cheap airfare to Mexico from another country.

Better yet, the cheapest airfare in Mexico might actually be on a bus. Many tourist attractions are less than a five-hour bus ride from Mexico City, and often even a shorter bus ride than that between each other. If the bus ride is going to be five hours or less, it makes a lot of sense to hop a bus rather than take a plane. Since the airport is farther out than the bus station, you will have to spend more time and energy getting to and from your arrival and departure points. Further, Mexican buses are quite cheap by North American or European standards, often coming out to less than two hundred pesos (twenty US dollars) for a one-way ticket on a five hour or less trip.
